Introducing Baby Balm: Our Unscented Whipped Tallow Balm for the Most Sensitive Skin

Since I started making whipped tallow balms, people have asked me if they can use Bee Balm, Beauty Balm, or Blue Balm on their babies. While these formulations are crafted for sensitive skin with kid-friendly oils, I have never felt comfortable recommending products with essential oils for young babies, especially those under 1 year.
Why? As much as I love essential oils in my home, I also believe they are medicinal, powerful and should be treated with respect and caution. That's also why my formulations are all calculated with adherence to most conservative recommendations for skin safety, so I can say they are crafted to be safe for sensitive skin (like your face) and also fall within the recommended dilutions for using with kids.
When I use an essential oil, I also do so for that specific oil's benefits, not just "to add oils." For example, blue tansy oil is in my Blue Balm not just for the cool color and nice scent it provides, but because it it is a powerful anti-inflammatory oil that works beautifully alongside the tallow to provide moisture and impact.
However, what about the youngest among us who have skin issues and needs-- the little babies who don't need essential oils in their lives, but need something moisturizing, nourishing, and natural? And what about people who don't like, or can't use, even gentle, naturally fragranced products?
That’s why I created Baby Balm—a baby-safe, all-natural, organic whipped tallow balm with no essential oils or added fragrance. This balm is designed to moisturize and protect the MOST sensitive skin while offering a gentle barrier against diaper rash.
A Balm for the Most Sensitive Skin
While I am passionate about clean fragrances (obviously!), I also understand that some people simply can’t tolerate scents of any kind. Even though all of my perfumes and products use clean, non-toxic ingredients, there are individuals—whether due to extreme fragrance sensitivities, allergies, or medical conditions—who need completely unscented options. Baby Balm was created with them in mind, too.
When my mom was going through chemotherapy, her skin became incredibly dry and tight. A thoughtful friend would bring her a homemade lotion that helped immensely. However, it was highly fragranced. While my mom personally loved good smelling things (like I do), and didn’t mind this at all, I have since learned that many chemo patients simply can't deal with any fragrance. Furthermore, essential oil usage of any kind may even be vetoed by their doctor out of an abundance of caution.
I definitely had this group of people in mind when making this balm.
Also, many individuals with allergies and heightened scent sensitivities struggle with even the most natural scents. I wanted to create an option that provides deep, nourishing moisture with no fragrance for these people.
Why Tallow?
As I've discussed in more depth in a previous blog post, Tallow has been used for centuries as a deeply moisturizing, skin-repairing ingredient. It closely mimics the natural oils in our skin, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin, eczema, or extreme dryness. Combined with beeswax, sunflower oil, and a touch of honey, Baby Balm is a gentle, effective solution for both babies and adults who need the purest skincare possible.
What’s in Baby Balm?
The ingredient's list for Baby Balm is simple, but high-quality, paired with my batch-tested method to provide a smooth and spreadable texture.
Beeswax – This is an addition that is unique to this product in my whipped tallow balm line up. Beeswax helps create a breathable barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and protecting against irritation. This makes it particularly good for diaper rashes!
Honey – Naturally soothing and antimicrobial, it helps calm and nourish delicate skin while preventing dryness.
Organic, Grassfed, American Tallow - I use the best-quality, organic tallow, wet-rendered in all of my whipped tallow balms. You can tell in terms of moisture, scent (or lack thereof) and texture! My tallow also comes from good old American farm cows.
Organic Sunflower Oil – Provides deep, lasting hydration without clogging pores.
What Does It Smell Like?
Not much! A keen nose may pick up on a buttery note from the tallow and a bit of beeswax when sniffing this balm directly. My husband and other friends says it smells like "nothing." I think that because I work with ingredients so much, I can detect them, but they are mild and medicinal smelling to me.
Because my other balms smell like essential oils, it's no surprise that the first thing people do when they get this (I've given it to friends who have had babies) go straight to sniffing it. We can't resist the temptation to sniff! (I'm the same way.) But remember, the whole point of this one is it's natural state. I haven't added anything to shape the smell; this balm is purely for moisture and protection. Any smell is naturally occurring and minimal

Can You Use Baby Balm on Your Face?
Yes! Baby Balm is a great option for those needing an ultra-gentle facial moisturizer, especially for dry or sensitive skin. I am making the price point of this one super affordable compared to most tallow balms on the market, because it is less expensive for me to make than the ones with the added benefits of essential oils (I alternatively thought about calling it Basic Balm, because we have to keep the alliteration going no matter what).
In short, I believe in pricing that benefits you, not just me. This could be a good one to try if you're looking for an affordable, organic whipped tallow balm.
