Choosing the Right Whipped Tallow Balm: A Guide to Our Balms

Updated: Jan 27

Discover the Perfect Whipped Tallow Balm for Your Skin: A Guide to Bloom’s Handcrafted Balms

If you follow Bloom on social media or are browsing around the site, you may have noticed that we have hand-whipped tallow balms! Despite the fact that whipped tallow balms are having a moment, tallow has been used as a nourishing and versatile skincare remedy since ancient times (read more about that, here). One question I get asked a lot about my whipped tallow balms is: "What is the difference between them?"

In this blog post, I want to answer that question! Today, I want to introduce you to my current line of whipped tallow balms and help you discover which one might be right for you!

This post will explore Bloom's current line of balms—Blue Balm, Bee Balm, and Beauty Balm—exploring their unique benefits, what sets them apart, and what they have in common.

A Little Bit About Bloom's Priorities

While the last century has introduced us to many petroleum products and plenty of unnatural preservatives, we have also come to learn about how the skin absorbs everything we put into it! Today, many people are interested in moving away from chemical-laden skincare products, which often offer very little (if any) nutritional value for the skin. Many of us want more simple, natural solutions that are made of all good stuff and no meaningless fillers.

This is why I’m so passionate about handcrafted self-care products. When you shop for beauty products at the store, especially skincare, you’ll often find that the best ingredients—the ones highlighted on the packaging—are listed toward the bottom of the ingredients list. The reason? Beauty products must list ingredients by their concentration, from highest to lowest. So, the ingredients that catch your eye are often only included in the product in very small amounts.

As the maker behind Bloom, I’m committed to putting the “good stuff” at the heart of my products—not just on the advertisement. In my products, you’ll find I go with an ingredients list that is as natural as I possibly can. When it comes to the whipped tallow balm line, that means 100% natural goodness! Each ingredient, in each balm, is carefully chosen and sourced to provide you with maximum goodness and quality.

Like all of my products, my whipped tallow balm line is packed with natural nutrients that deeply nourish and rejuvenate your skin. You can find each of these balms available on my Etsy shop, but first, let’s talk about what they do!

What Makes Bloom’s Whipped Tallow Balm Special?

All of our balms are made from a base of 100% grass-fed organic beef tallow. This natural ingredient has been used for thousands of years in skincare. Our ancestors knew this ingredient was versatile and nourishing to the skin (although I do wonder how they figured that out!)

Today, we know that tallow is rich in vitamins that support skin health, like vitamin A, D, E, and K. Tallow is known for its ability to deeply moisturize, protect, and support skin healing.

I also use organic sunflower oil, another superpower skincare ingredient, local honey, and carefully sourced essential oils to create each balm.

I make my whipped tallow balms in small batches to ensure quality, and whip them by hand to create a light, fluffy texture that is quickly and easily absorbed into the skin! This makes for some pretty delicious skin-food...and sure, I’ll admit, they look edible once whipped. (Don’t recommend eating them though!)

Meet the Balms: Blue Balm, Bee Balm, and Beauty Balm

All of my whipped tallow balms are designed to be deeply hydrating and soothing to the skin. They are all great for moisturizing both face and body. However, each one is also crafted with a specific focus in mind, using carefully selected essential oils to complement tallow's ability to absorb across the skin barrier quickly and effectively.

Blue Balm is crafted with Blue Tansy oil, making it a soothing choice for sensitive and reactive skin. Blue Tansy, with its calming properties, helps to reduce redness, inflammation and allergic reactions. Blue Tansy’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also make it a great anti-aging balm.

I have used this balm to soothe my own rosacea issues, and I have also had many people tell me that this balm, in particular, is helpful for their eczema/psoriasis. And bonus fun points: Blue Tansy oil gives this balm a natural, blue hue and woodsy, calming aroma.

Key Benefits of Blue Balm

  • Anti-inflammatory and soothing for irritated skin.

  • Ideal for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

  • Can be used as a night cream for its calming scent and reparative effects.

  • Soothes burns, rashes, and minor skin irritations.

  • Antioxidant properties make it a good choice for anti-aging.

  • Soothing, woodsy scent of Blue Tansy and natural blue color.

Best For: Those seeking relief from inflamed or sensitive skin (including rashes/eczema-prone skin) or anyone looking for a calming moisturizer to wind down in the evening.

NOT for: Pregnant women and young children. Blue Tansy oil is not recommended during pregnancy, so just to be safe we’d suggest a different balm if you are expecting (the other two balms are both fine during pregnancy!)

Bee Balm is my best-selling whipped tallow balm (and it was chosen as a gift at for the North American Renderer's Association Conference this year!) This balm combines the nurturing power of tallow with honey and lavender for added protection and hydration. The extra honey in this balm forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to lock in moisture.

Lavender essential oil is also one of my all time favorite ingredients (and the original ingredient that inspired Bloom)! One reason I like it so much? It’s a mega-multi-tasker. Lavender oil is antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and, of course, it has such a relaxing scent! People love this one as a night cream and to use for kids. It’s another good one to try for mysterious rashes. I love to rub my daughter’s feet with this one to help her sleep. I also like to use it as a face mask and/or as you would use an oil cleanser.

  • Key Benefits of Bee Balm

    • Extra honey provides a thicker, more protective layer for skin exposed to harsh elements.

    • Great for dry, cracked skin, particularly in winter months.

    • Supports the skin’s natural barrier function.

    • Relaxing lavender scent.

    • Multi-purpose.

Best For: People dealing with very dry or chapped skin, or those needing an extra layer of protection against cold or windy weather. This is also a great household balm, as it is kid-safe and can be used on burns, bug bites, etc.!

Beauty Balm is formulated with Frankincense oil, which is a wonderful, ancient ingredient that is perhaps best known for its rejuvenating and anti-aging properties. This oil has been shown to boost cell turnover and improve the elasticity of the skin. More research is needed, but it is also believed to help with hyperpigmentation and UV damage!

Beauty Balm, like my other balms, is a good multi-tasker! It is also pregnancy and kid safe. However, this one is particularly designed for skincare and is a perfect addition to any nightly skincare routine. It’s nice to put a layer of this balm on your face right before bed, knowing you’re helping your skin’s natural healing process while you sleep. With frankincense’s healing properties, this one is also great for massage and it works extra well on insect bites!

  • Key Benefits:

    • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    • Helps to even skin tone and improve elasticity.

    • Ideal for dry and mature skin types.

    • Doubles as a targeted treatment for conditions like eczema or acne due to its restorative properties.

    • Useful for massaging inflamed areas and improving circulation.

Best For: Anyone looking to boost their anti-aging routine with a natural, nourishing product or those needing a versatile balm for both hydration and targeted skin issues.

Similarities Across Bloom’s Whipped Tallow Balms

While each whipped tallow balm is tailored to specific skin needs, they do share several core qualities. Here are some things they have in common.

  • Natural Ingredients: Each balm is hand-whipped in small batches, using only the purest, natural ingredients like grass-fed beef tallow, organic oils, and honey.

  • Nourishing & Hydrating: The rich, creamy texture of tallow helps to deeply moisturize the skin, making these balms ideal for anyone needing a hydration boost.

  • Versatile Uses: Whether you need a nightly moisturizer, a balm for inflamed areas, or a solution for very dry skin, each of our balms can be adapted to fit into your skincare routine. Many of my customers enjoy all 3 of these products and alternate which one they use (as do I!)

Which Balm is Right for You?

Choosing the right balm depends on your specific skin needs and preferences. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Choose Blue Balm if you’re seeking a calming, anti-inflammatory solution, especially for sensitive or irritated skin, rashes, etc. (Not during pregnancy!)

  • Choose Bee Balm if you need a protective barrier against the elements or suffer from dry, cracked skin, or want a kid-friendly balm that will multi-task.

  • Choose Beauty Balm if your focus is on anti-aging and evening out skin tone, or if you want a versatile balm that works for both night-time hydration and targeted treatment and/or massage!
